The name Molise first appeared in the High Middle Ages as a Norman county, named after the de' Moulins family. Prehistoric evidence at Isernia La Pineta shows human habitation up to 700,000 years ago, including a child fossil from 583,000 years ago. Before Roman rule, the area was part of Samnium, inhabited by Samnite tribes such as the Pentri. The Samnite Wars (4th–3rd centuries BC) led to Roman conquest, and under Augustus the territory became part of Regio IV Samnium.
