Podlaskie Voivodeship

Podlaskie Voivodeship is a province in northeastern Poland, created on 1 January 1999 as part of Polish local government reforms. Its capital and largest city is Białystok, and it borders Belarus and Lithuania, as well as three other Polish voivodeships. The voivodeship takes its name from the historical region of Podlasie, whose etymology is disputed between a derivation meaning 'by the woods' and one meaning 'under the Poles' or 'near the border with Poland.'

The voivodeship was created on 1 January 1999 from the former Białystok and Łomża Voivodeships and the eastern half of the former Suwałki Voivodeship. Its creation led to disputes, notably over the Via Baltica expressway, which was originally planned to run through Łomża but was rerouted after Łomża lost its voivodeship capital status. The region faced high unemployment in its early years, with about 75,000 unemployed in January 2000 and a rate over 12%, highest in Grajewo County.

Its largely unspoiled nature is a chief asset, with around 30% of its area under legal protection, including four national parks (Białowieża, Biebrza, Narew, Wigry) and the Białowieża Forest biosphere reserve. The voivodeship received 386.86 million euros from the Operational Programme for the Development of Eastern Poland (2007–2013) for modern economy, growth centres, road infrastructure, and technical assistance. A commemorative ceremony for its 25th anniversary was held on 15 November 2024 in Białystok.
